I could’ve kissed Evun right then and there.

Anybody else wouldn’t have recognized what those sounds were, she was practically invisible to the guards of both the Sanctuary and Eescarah’s Paradise, but I hadn’t spent months with my love to not recognize her when she crept her way into a room. One look up confirmed it. Evun’s curls dangled by her hips and her gorgeous curves made their own kind of dance.

Pushing up from the ground, I grinned. “Hey, pretty lady. What brought you down here?”

“Moon’s death!” Quick as a flash, a knife gleamed in the air, gripped in her hand. I knew exactly where that came from, a sheath that she’d molded herself inside her tunic. She twisted it between her fingers, eyes wide. It took her a second to look over her surroundings before settling on me, propped up on the floor. The knife disappeared.

Evun clutched her chest, “Caleb!”

“You’re looking beautiful as ever.”

“But—how—?” She struggled with her question before she shook her head in amazement. “I was sneaking away food for you, you bosect-lump bastard! Saying a greeting with fright, why would you—to me?” She kept her voice in a low whisper and steadied her breathing. Before I could explain, she rushed across the floorboards and gathered me into a hug. “How did you escape?”

“Did you think they could really hold me?”

Evun had to silence her laughter. She shook her head and pressed against me, sitting in my lap. “When will I learn not to doubt you? Gin does it with such ease.”

I helped her up and walked us from my hiding place. This was my common-law wife, the woman who could’ve written her own name on some poor man with a sword. She tried to return to the food she’d swiped me, but I had different ideas. Her breath caught in her throat when I wrapped an arm around her. I wanted a kiss. Just one before we really had to get back to work.

“You’ll get used to it.” I chuckled against her lips, tilting her head to the side to deepen the kiss. “How close are we to the next ship?”

“A sun, perhaps a little longer.” Evun said breathlessly. She brushed her fingertips against my chest, but something switched on her face. She frowned. “There is something different among the guards. They flinch at the slightest sound. They are not allowed to sleep. They are with the same expectations as us.”

I nodded towards the door frame. “Can you take me to the oarsmen’s galley?”

The hallway was the perfect blend of quiet, with the guards’ words coming in from above the thin ceiling. Everyone was settling in for the beginning of a long day on the Or’malu River. Evun curled a finger towards me and gestured me closer. The two of us kept close to the wall.

“Caleb,” she muttered, “I have not witnessed a sign of a man on the shores.”

“No Nökorth either?”

“Nökorth?”

Scanning down the hallway, I motioned her forward again. “I told him the moment he got there, he had to leave Gin with someone trustworthy and drag all of Aeskhos’s men here.
